You know, when people don't know things, that doesn't bother me. Even when they have NO EXCUSE for not knowing something, I don't get too bothered by it. What I absolutely can't stand, are people who don't know something and therefore YOU are wrong, because they couldn't possibly be incorrect in their assumptions (as vaguely gathered as they may be). I just got finished dealing with such a person, and this post is necessary lest I explode.
So, yesterday afternoon, I was sitting around talking with Amber about how ridiculous some people's expectations are of the Tech staff here. We get complaints about "overly noisy fans" that *shock* sound LIKE A FAN. Fans are meant to sound like fans. And there isn't a blasted thing we can do about it. Similarly, Amber was working on some girl's computer (coated in bumper stickers which I will have to either peel off or replace the bezel in a year when she turns it in) with complaints about it taking too long to start up. Well, this doesn't seem like too big an issue, could very well be a hard drive going bad. Just to see the problem, we start her computer up to see how long it actually takes to boot. It booted ok, but was stalling on the desktop, we were concerned, until we realized she had set EVERY MESSENGER CLIENT KNOWN TO MAN (and perhaps a few known only to cats) to start on booting into Windows. I think it took 5 minutes before we could even touch her desktop. After giving me a look that says "I think I'd like to kill this person now." Amber reloads the machine just so any software foul-ups would be removed from the load (This doesn't change the fact that booting creates a pop-up hailstorm), tests the Harddrive, and sends it back to her and explains that it takes time to boot when you try to run these things. I even offered to help her fix it so they wouldn't pop up on booting. She denies this offer, claiming that "Oh, no, I think the reload fixed it. That usually fixes my friend's computers." I shrugged to myself and let her go her merry way. Her problem right? Wrong. Today, roughly 45 minutes ago now, Chris comes in asking me what we generally do about slow load times, as everyone but the student workers were in a staff meeting until 4. I told him we normally do a reload and test the Hard drive. I guess she heard it was me in here, so she comes running in here, half yelling "Why isn't this FIXED!? I walked ALL the way out here to get it fixed, but you guys didn't help it at all! How many times do I have to come out here before I get my computer fixed!" I gave her the nicest look I could muster at the time, which wasn't a very good one, considering I was technically on break eating my delicious chips, "Well, If you would like, we can take your computer back and run our diagnostics again to see if anything comes up. Sometimes a bad hard drive can be missed the first time through, but I honestly don't think its going to do much good. A computer can only do so much at once (technically it can only do two things at once with our processor chip, but I wasn't going to bother with specifics) and you are making it work very hard to boot up by having all these programs start up at the beginning." So yeah, she finally let us have it, looking very indignant and completely justified in her actions. Amber just got back from the staff meeting, and she spewed every vile curse I had been forced to keep to myself during the ordeal. People are dumb. Dumb people are even more dumb. But dumb people who don't know it, those are worst of all. I expect to hear from this same person again tomorrow, and I expect Aubrey to go out there and make her feel like a complete dumb-ass.
Anyways, wow, I've been writing this for an hour now....lol...considering how little work i do, this job is definitely worth its minor setbacks.
Ugh....I feel completely unmotivated to do anything right now. And whats worse, the ONE THING I wanted to do, is rendered impossible. I planned on doing laundry, but nooooo there is 1 out of 6 washers operational at the moment. Not even worth bothering. Luckily I should have some time tomorrow between class and lab. Hopefully, I'll be able to get done with lab and get over to Lauren's house fairly early. I'm looking forward to our first date in awhile. I know, we do stuff all the time, but we don't really go on any "dates" anymore. Oh man...I have done a good deal of work this weekend, but I still feel like I'm going to be behind this coming week. Dunno how either, because I'm not going to Communications Tuesday, so i don't have that due. Chem is the only real bother for Tuesday, but I'm going to do my best not to be overly anxious about it. We just had a quiz Thursday, and our test isn't until the 10th. The probability of something major occurring Tuesday are slim. I just wish I was on freaking Spring Break this week instead of a month ago =( Now all of my friends can do stuff, but no, I have to deal with school and work etc. Its like last year all over again lol. Oh well, thats life. I don't really know why I'm even awake right now. I feel so out of place going to bed 'early' (before 2 AM) every night. Noone else on my hall has class until 11. Hell, my room mate doesn't even wake up until 1 PM. And its always a bit awkward when I have to be like "Yeah...I'm going to bed." Thats why I tend to stay up later than I normally would usually. Next year will be better since I'll have my very own room to myself. But yeah, I think I'm going to try to get some sleep now. (I usually stay up until I'm tired enough to say "Fuck your lazy ass, some people have jobs, I'm going to sleep.")
Well, not really, but perhaps they should lol. I think I've done something at least partially related to work every day the entire break, with a few minor exceptions. This however, does not mean I didn't spend my break playing a gratuitous amount of video games and hanging with people I haven't seen in awhile, and some I can never see too much! I hung out with Lauren a couple of times, and I get to see Tasha and Alex for the first time in a long time last Friday. It was a good time, even though I think Lauren hated me for making us stay so long. All in all, its been a good break. I don't move back in until next Saturday, so I guess i better enjoy it while it lasts. Of course, I'm going to be working most of this week and cleaning buildings every night (except Thursday) this week, so I probably won't do much relaxing until I move back in at Wake. It seems really weird talking about Wake as though I'm not already there, since I'm at work right now, which is on campus. I think this place has really grown on me. At first I was like "yeah, its nice." But once I left for break I realized I missed living on campus and being in control of whatever i did, instead of trying to live around my family and its crazy schedule. But, thats life I suppose.
But speaking of work, I have edged my way in to a clique. And by clique, I mean the 5 or so people here that play World of Warcraft as much (probably more actually) as I do. It was really kind of odd lol. First, I'm sitting in the Tech shop just before lunch with one of the techs, and she asks me if I play any online games. I told her I play WoW, and then we started talking about how much the Alliance sucks and how nerdy we are but we don't care. It was pretty awesome. Then I go to lunch and, being inspired by my conversation, decide to play a bit of WoW while I take my hour lunch. In the breakroom, I find a couple of people hunched over laptops playing Warcraft like they belonged there. So I joined them and chilled for a while. Watching everyone get really nervous looking when they walked in the breakroom to get coffee or whatnot and found a bunch of nerds playing an MMO with the volume up as loud as it could go. Never have I been more amused lol.
Anyways. Yeah, Its almost quitting time and I still need to reload this piece of crap T60 so I can go the freak home!!!
Today was a good day. I don't really know WHY it was good, but it was, and I'll take it. I think its just the fact that I'm caught up with all my homework, I get to go see Lauren this weekend, I DON'T have a lab due Monday, and I've got my schedule figured out for next semester. Granted, it probably won't end up how I want it, but I've even managed to plan room for that so i don't end up with suck classes. See? Its a good day in the life of Chuck. Hell, WORK was even pretty cool. We have a new tech guy, so its a little less boring around there. He seems like a really cool guy. His nickname is Bacon. I'm not entirely sure why, but Jeff (my boss guy) has known him since High School, so it came from there I assume. Tomorrow will be the first normal day in the office with him there, since today we were moving (and by WE I mean Jeff and Bacon while I watched and felt awkward) 500 pound TV/Monitor things... Yeah, tomorrow should be interesting just to see how things unfold. What I'm NOT looking forward to is doing System Checks of the entire campus. Which means I go through EVERY ROOM AT WAKE FOREST with a Laptop, a DVD and a VHS tape and making sure everything works as it should. Its gonna blow. especially once it gets cold, because those golf carts aren't quite heated.....Whatever. It won't be so bad. There are worse fates. Like sitting in that room with nothing to do but watch Jeff goof off with Photoshop and watch Burt shop for Crew stuff online o.0
Also, last night me and Lauren went to a midnight orchestra concert here at Wake. It was really good. Which is a good thing, because I would have totally fallen asleep if it sucked lol.
Anyways, I give you Eagles, because its the only music I have that I can actually post here since Ruckus SUCKS.
Thats right, today was my first day in my entire life that I've done work that will physically culminate into a paycheck! Hurrah! Its not such a bad job either.Considering I get to sit on my butt for however many hours and do homework until something needs fixing, then I go help fix it. Preeeetty easy in my opinion. My supervisors are pretty cool too. we sat around for an hour and a half arguing about Windows Vista and how much it sucks. Because it sucks. Other than that, I was in Student health Monday with what appeared to be appendicitis until a round of "green Cocktail" (which tastes as good as it sounds..*gag*) proved it was indeed just REALLY severe indigestion. Freaking Pizza Hut. Oh well, point is I missed my Chem lab, which blows because it would have been my first time using a bunsen burner in a LONG time. I miss the smell of burning gas and beakers of boiling chemicals *sniff* Ah well, looks like next week will be just as entertaining, so hope yet remains :) I also just got my first homework assignment back, which I aced in my gradebook, though there is one question which i will need to petition, because there is no such thing as being TOO thorough, and I shan't be punished for it! Besides, I don't want a B for my first grade when it could be a 100. Anywho.....yeah....thats all I got for now.
